Bernard Villemot

Between his master's voice coming out of the phonograph trumpet and now, this image appearing on the television screen, the Little Nipper is clearly perplexed!

The work of his creator, Bernard Villemot (1911-1989) , embodied the wit, urbanity, and style that an envious world thinks of as peculiarly French attributes.

Ballyworld , designed for the shoe company, Bally of Switzerland, is an elegant example of commercial art. Throughout a fifty year career, Villemot could be relied on to produce images that really were worth a thousand words to his employers, who got to back is the glow of his sophistication and art deco-influenced style.

Villemot's best loved work came out of his thirty year association with Orangina, the company that makes a very popular orange and lime carbonated drink. Orangina Umbrella, the first of some two dozen posters, appeared in 1953.

For three decades Villemot made fanciful variations on this theme.

Hi Jane, I love to see these fantastic Orangina ads - the bottle is a beautiful shape too. It's definitely an orange drink, though, not lemon/lime. Not too sweet, so it may be cut with lemon, as they say in the soft drinks underworld.
